Measurement Studio

Five minutes with a soft tape, a friend, and a flat wall — and you’ll know your size with confidence. Inches or centimeters both work. Most fit issues we see are people guessing instead of measuring; this is the fix.

The Chest + 4" Rule

For a traditional barong drape, add 4 inches to your bare chest measurement — that’s your size. For a trimmer silhouette, add 2 inches instead. The traditional drape is what every Filipino wedding photographer is expecting; the trim cut is more contemporary office wear.

1. Chest

Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, under your arms, level all the way around. Breathe normally. Don’t pull tight — the tape should sit firm but not compress. Repeat once to confirm; record the larger of the two.

2. Shoulder

From the tip of one shoulder bone to the other, straight across the back. Stand naturally — don’t pull your shoulders back. If you’re broad-shouldered but narrow at the waist, the chest measurement is what matters most for sizing; shoulder is a sanity check.

3. Sleeve

From shoulder tip down the outside of your arm to your wrist, arm relaxed at your side. The barong sleeve traditionally ends at the wrist bone — slightly longer than a typical Western dress shirt.

4. Length

From the base of the collar at the back, straight down to where you want the barong to end. Traditional length is mid-hip to mid-thigh; shorter than that reads casual, longer reads ceremonial. For weddings, lean toward mid-thigh.

Common body-type adjustments

  • Athletic build / broad shoulders, narrow waist: Size up to fit the chest, then plan for a tailor to take in the sides 1–2 inches if you want a closer waist read. The barong silhouette is forgiving here.
  • Long torso: Pay extra attention to the length measurement. The standard barong sits at mid-hip; for a 6’2″+ frame, mid-thigh often photographs better than mid-hip.
  • Shorter than 5’8″: The opposite — the standard length can hit awkwardly mid-thigh. Order with length 1–2 inches shorter than spec, or plan for a hem.
  • Heavier set: The chest+4 rule still applies, but consider sizing up an additional half-step for the drape to read clean. The barong is meant to skim, not cling.
  • Between two sizes: Size up. Filipino weaves have minimal stretch and a too-tight barong photographs poorly under arms and across the back.

Frequently asked

What if I’m between two sizes?

Size up. Filipino-tradition weaves have minimal stretch — a too-tight barong shows the strain at the buttons and across the shoulders, and there’s no recovering it after the first wash. A too-loose barong reads traditional-drape; a too-tight barong reads “didn’t fit.” This is the safe direction.

Should I measure over a shirt?

Bare chest, no shirt. The barong is meant to be worn over a thin undershirt, and the chest+4 allowance built into our sizing already accounts for that. Measuring over a sweater or jacket adds 1–2 sizes’ worth of false bulk.

What’s the difference between US sizing and Philippine sizing?

About one size. A man who wears Medium in Manila is typically a US Small here. We follow the US chart — see our full US Sizing Chart for the conversion table.

What does the 30-day fit policy actually mean?

If your barong arrives and the fit isn’t right, email us within 30 days of delivery and we’ll exchange for a different size or refund — no questions, no fee. Customers cover return shipping unless the item arrived defective. Email hi@handmadekapamilya.com to start.
